Marist St Pats: Premier

June 2012: Marist St Pats celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2011 and in this, the club's 41styear, MSP is enjoying a strong season with its premier team finishing second in the Swindale Shield and its senior 1 side topping the Harper Lock competition.

MSP was officially created late in 1970 and by the end of the decade had grown to have one of the best senior teams in the country. Its 42-game winning streak made it one of the great sides in Wellington club rugby history, then and now.

They won their first Jubilee Cup in 1978 and again in 1979 - winning all 20 games in 1979 and completing the Swindale Shield/Jubilee Cup double - under the captaincy of Kevin Horan and won a further seven after that in the next two decades, including winning the last final played on Athletic Park in 1999 against Kilbirnie rivals Poneke.

The 1994 Jubilee Cup win was a particularly significant victory for coach Horan, marking the first time in the comparatively short history of MSP that one man had both captained and coached a Cup winning team. The 1994 and 1995 title-winning captain Iain Potter then became the second MSP man to achieve this feat when he coached the 1997 Jubilee Cup winning team.

Most recently, MSP were crowned back-to-back Jubilee Cup champions in 2008 and 2009.? After sharing the title with Northern United in a drawn final in 2008, MSP won it outright in 2009 when centre Chris Slade kicked seven penalties as part of their 21-16 win.

2008 was an outstanding season for the Premiers, winning all of their last ten games in the first round to capture the Swindale Shield and playing through unbeaten in the round-robin of the Jubilee Cup to qualify top and earn a home semi-final at Evans Bay Park. Their Swindale Shield win was their 12th overall since their first in 1977 and also their first since 2000. MSP became the first club to simultaneously hold the Bill Brien challenge Cup (Wellington club rugby's Ranfurly Shield-style trophy), Swindale Shield, the Andy Leslie Trophy (awarded to the top qualifier of the Jubilee Cup round-robin) and Jubilee Cup.

In 2012 MSP is fielding 10 senior teams. These include a premier side, three senior teams, an under-21 team, three under-85 kg sides, and Reserves and Presidents teams. Additionally, the Junior club has well over 200 players and 16 teams.

MSP has some of Wellington's best training facilities at its gym and training grounds next to St Pat's College at Evans Bay Park. In 2007 a new state-of-the-art synthetic surface was installed in the gym, to go along with the sports education and weights rooms. In 2010 an Honours Board was unveiled, celebrating their rich history. Last year the club also celebrated the selection of its seventh All Black - loose forward Victor Vito, who also became MSP's first All Black since midfielder John Schuster in 1987. Victor went on to become part of New Zealand's World Cup-winning team. Other All Blacks from MSP include Joe Karam, Grant Batty, John Fleming, Brian McGrattan and Tu Wyllie, plus Maori All Blacks such as former captain Paul Quinn.

Jeff Toomaga-Allen, MSP's Sportsman of the Year in 2011, is enjoying his first year in the Hurricanes, alongside teammate Victor Vito. Hooker Ged Robinson is a current Melbourne Rebels Investec Super Rugby player. Under-20 rep Solomona Sakalia was a member of the Junior World-Cup winning team in 2011 and Paul Tuia was in the Samoan under-20s.

The club has great depth with eight of its teams making semi-finals last year, with two under-85 sides and the colts going on to win their respective grades. Coaches and players from across the club were acknowledged at the WRFU's annual Tui Awards when MSP collected six of the 18 trophies on offer.
