Upper Hutt

The Upper Hutt Rugby Club is based in Railway Terrace, Upper Hutt. The home ground is Maidstone Park. All teams train at the “Stone” and make use of the extensive facilities.

All grades of rugby are catered for, from Premier to social. We put a great deal of work, and place a huge emphasis on our U19s and Colts teams. We believe this is where our future Premier players need to learn the game and develop. Whatever grade you intend to play in 2006, you will have a team and place in the Upper Hutt Rugby Club.

During the summer months skills and fitness assessments will be carried out and individual programmes will be given out. This is available for all players and intending players. Players are welcome to use the full gymnasium facilities and boxing circuits are also run over the summer months. Upper Hutt Rugby has the services of a qualified fitness trainer by the name of Craig McDougall. Craig trains various athletes ranging from boxers, cyclists, sprinters, middle distance runners, and premier club rugby and netball players. Craig has learnt first hand what it takes to succeed in a sporting environment by applying himself to win 2 x NZ Light Heavyweight boxing champion titles in 1998 and 2003, & represented NZ at the Oceania games 1998 & against other international teams. Since then he has gained a Level 1 & 2 NZ boxing coach/trainer.

The Upper Hutt Rugby Club prides itself on developing up and coming players. Two players have been selected for the 2006 Wellington Air New Zealand Cup squad, Cory Jane and Hurricanes Prop Tim Fairbrother, while Cory is also a member of the New Zealand Maori and 7’s teams and won a Gold medal at the 2006 Commonwealth games. Other players of reaching high achievements in 2006 include Justin Va’a was selected for the Manu Samoan international team, Alby Mathewson played for New Zealand U21 at the 2006 world cup, Greg Tweedle also played for the New Zealand at the U19 World Cup.
