Stokes Valley: Senior 2

Despite a very recent drop in the team’s fortunes, that has seen them finish in the bottom half of the Harper Lock Shield ladder in each of the three seasons, Stokes Valley has generally been extremely competitive in the contemporary era. Their best season of late was in 2008 when they finished sixth in the Harper Lock Shield and went on to win the second round Ed Chaney Cup.

In 2007 they missed out by one place in a spot in the Hardam Cup, and were then pipped 23-16 in that year’s Ed Chaney Cup semi-finals by Johnsonville who won at the death by scoring a length of the field runaway try.

The Stokes Valley Rugby Football Club (SVRFC) was founded on 18 January 1949, starting with one team in the Junior 2 Grade and growing to four teams by 1964 (after 25 years). In 1965 the club gained "Senior" status in the Senior 3rd Grade and between then and the 1989 seasons (the next 25 years) the club grew in size to an average of 8-10 teams per year with the top team in either Senior 3 or Senior 2 Grade.

This increase in team numbers was in line with the general population growth of the valley. In this period the club also attracted Senior 1 players from other clubs, notably Peter Delabaca from MSP, Jack Seymour from Petone and Jimmy Brown from Petone.

In the 1990 and 1991 seasons the club was at its zenith with 11 teams and the Senior 2 team winning promotion against University to the top WRFU grade Senior 1sts in 1991. This grade became the Premier Grade in 1992 and the club held Premier status for four seasons.

Since that time team numbers have decreased to an average of six teams per season with the top team in the Senior 1 grade except in 2000 and 2001 when the club played in the Senior 2 grade.

Throughout the years the club has won a number of WRFU trophies ranging from the U17 grade in 1971 to the Senior 1 Ed Chaney Cup in 2008.

Between 1956 and 2007, 15 members have been elected as Life Members - 7 of whom are now deceased.  A number of members have also been elected to WRFU positions including Management Committee and Vice President of the union.

The club’s goals have changed little from the beginning; they still aim to provide a great social environment for players and their families. Over the last 62 seasons the club has steadily developed, through the building of a gymnasium in 1966 that also served as the clubrooms, and later the building of the current lounge in 1979, and now a well equipped weights room, wet weather area two floodlit fields and an indoor gym.

Over the years the club’s premises situated at Delany Park have moved and improved, initially situated in the "Tin Hutt" on Stokes Valley Road, then moved to the new gymnasium built by volunteer labour in 1964 and the opening of the present lounge on George Street in 1978.

In 2011 the SVRFC is fielding Senior 1, Senior 3, Women's and U85kg teams.
