Visiting teams won the day in both representative fixtures today involving Wellington teams, with the Wellington Pride missing out to Waikato 13-35 at Westpac Stadium and the Wellington Samoans going down 33-50 to the Auckland U21s at Porirua Park.?

Wellington Samoans (33) v Auckland U21s (50)

The Auckland U21s won a free-spirited game by scoring four tries in 15 minutes at the start of the second half.?

It was 19-19 at halftime, but this electric burst of scoring saw the Aucklanders extend their lead to 45-19.

The Wellington Samoans scored two tries to close the gap, but they made too many errors over the final quarter playing catch-up rugby to conjure a comeback win.

In a nine-try spectacle, both teams came to the ground with a positive attitude and attacked in most situations. Auckland were just that bit better organised, which was reflected in them scoring eight tries and kicking five conversions. The Wellington Samoans scored five tries and kicked four conversions.?

For the Wellington Samoans, Wainuiomata No. 8 Ben Tupuola was the standout player and he scored two tries. Their Argentinian connection, lock Agustine Escalona, was also an impressive performer, while most of the backs cut capers at various times.

For the visitors, their biggest attacking threat was second five-eighth Kevin Finau who scored two tries and broke the line regularly, while No. 8 Tom Robinson also played well. ?

Thus ends the Wellington Samoans’ 2014 campaign, with many of the players involved in the upcoming club Sevens tournaments.?

Wellington Pride (13) v Waikato Women (35)

The Wellington Pride conceded a five-try blitz in the middle stages of their game to lose 13-35 to Waikato in their penultimate round Women’s NPC fixture in the curtain-raiser fixture at Westpac Stadium.

The Wellington Pride started and finished the game playing with passion and zeal - deservedly leading 6-0 after 20 minutes and dominating the last 15 minutes – but in between they conceded five tries and 35 unanswered points to dash their hopes of victory.

In this period, Waikato left wing Huia Harding and centre Stacey Waaka each scored braces, while second five-eighth Chelsea Alley scored their match winning try with over half an hour to play.

The Pride rallied well and fought hard throughout the fourth quarter, as they had done early on, but the damage was done and they head out to Porirua Park next week to play the Hawke’s Bay Tuis in their final match of the season.?

Players to stand out for the Pride included lock Joanah Ngan-Woo, in the lineouts and in general play, prop Muteremoana Aiattu for her work-rate and ball carrying, captain and No. 8 Aimee Sutorious, in the breakdowns, fullback Georgia Daals, for her counterattacking, and replacements MaryAnn Collins and Sammy McIntosh for their added punch.?

The Pride made a committed start to the contest, tearing into the breakdowns, scrambling well in defence and stealing some set-piece ball off the visitors.

They were rewarded for a positive start with two Lizzie Goulden penalties, putting them ahead 6-0 after 20 minutes.

A Pride handling error from a re-start gave Waikato a sniff and a subsequent kick and chase led to a penalty and Waikato second five-eighth Chelsea Alley posted her team’s first points.

Waikato then struck with two carbon-copy long-range tries in five minutes, both scored by left wing Huia Harding.

Alley kicked her second penalty to put Waikato ahead 18-6 just before halftime.?

But they weren’t done. Waikato made another raid up into the 22, Alley kicked ahead into the in-goal and centre Stacey Waaka burst through to score her ninth try of the season and Waikato’s third to put them ahead 23-6 at halftime.

Waaka collected a wicked bounce from another Alley stab kick and ran through to score her 10th try of the year and Waikato’s bonus point try early in the second half, increasing their lead to 30-6.

Waikato maintained their pressure, ?Alley crossing through to score their next try, extending the lead to 35-6.

Regrouping, the Pride got some good phase play going, and after a long assault on Waikato’s line they finally crossed through replacement forward Sammy McIntosh.?

Goulden’s conversion closed the margin to 13-35, the final score.?

Scores: Waikato 35 (Huia Harding 2, Stacey Waaka 2, Chelsea Alley try; Alley 2 pen, 2 con) beat the Wellington Pride 13 (Sammy McIntosh try, Lizzie Goulden 2 pen, con). HT 23-6.
