Scots College pull clear to beat Lindisfarne

Scots College: 36 (Sage Shaw-Tait, Malo Manuao, Epa Sailo, Max Taptikilis, Moala Katoa,  Jack Gray; Manuao 3 con) Lindisfarne College: 10 (Mahia Salisbury,  Maika Nasilasila tries)

Scots College have beaten Lindisfarne College 36-10 in their annual traditional fixture in Wellington today.

In fine, calm conditions, Scots pulled away from the stubborn Hawke’s Bay visitors scoring three of their six tries in the last 15 minutes.

Lindisfarne began in promising style anchoring themselves inside the Scots 22, but a turnover and break by Scots first-five Jack Mexted sparked a movement which saw centre Sage Shaw-Tait cross the chalk.

Lindisfarne replied when Mahia Salisbury caught the hosts napping on the short side, but in the process of scoring the try the winger injured his shoulder and was forced to leave the field.

Malo Manuao had an authoritative game at second-five and he scored the last try of the first-half to make it 12-5 at the interval.

Manuao’s opposite Maika Nasilasila struck first in the second spell when he breached the Scots defence and out sprinted the cover.

The Scots bench included regular starters Malo Katoa, Tai Neli and Jack Gray. The inclusion of these three in particular saw Scots gain considerable momentum.

No.8 Epa Sailo muscled over to make it 17-10 and when hooker Max Taptikilis ploughed through weak ruck defence Lindisfarne’s resistance was shattered.

Gray scored the try of the match when he received a 20-metre pass, dogged the fullback and raced 30-metres to touchdown under the sticks. The Scots crowd amusingly chanted, “he has a girlfriend” shortly after Gray’s flourish.

Scots loosehead Isaiah Peachey had a busy game and Lindisfarne captain and blindside Ben Frame never stopped toiling.

On Saturday Lindisfarne tackles Francis Douglas Memorial College in the Central North Island competition while Scots takes on Wellington College in a top four Wel Tec Premiership showdown.
