Northern United: Alapati Leiua

October 2013: Alapati Leiua missed the first eight rounds of the 2013 ITM Cup, but was back in hot form upon his return to the Ricoh Wellington Lions against Auckland in round nine. He was set to line up for his 50th match for the Lions against the Hawke's Bay Magpies in the 10th and final round-robin match.

Leuia was a standout Hurricanes back in 2013. Following the Investec Super Rugby season ending injury at the start of the year to Cory Jane, Leiua’s contribution was highlighted by him making 15 straight starts on the wing and scoring a memorable intercept try to sink the Crusaders in Wellington. He also made his Test debut for Samoa in the victory over Scotland in Durban in June 2013.

Alapati Leiua had a phenomenal year in 2009, sweeping all before him in Wellington club rugby and becoming a first choice starter for the Wellington Lions on the wing and at centre.

It was in the centre position where he excelled in club rugby for Northern United, scoring a remarkable 21 tries in 16 games and lighting up the rugby fields of Wellington.

He made his Wellington Lions debut in the first Ranfurly Shield defence of the year against Wairarapa Bush and his ITM Cup debut off the bench in round four against Auckland - going on to start in the last 10 matches of the year and scoring 5 tries for the Lions in 13 appearances.

In 2011, Leiua was named Wellington Player of the Year.

Leiua played his second full season of Super Rugby for the Hurricanes in 2012. Previously, he made 13 caps in his debut Super Rugby season, backing up an active ITM Cup season for the Wellington Lions that saw him play 13 games as both a centre and a wing. The then Hurricanes Wider Training Squad member Leiua was called into the Hurricanes in the early rounds of the 2010 Super 14, answering an injury crisis.
