Scots College fly home to win Hurricanes Secondary Schools Sevens

RLM
Scots College have flown home to win the inaugural Hurricanes Youth Council Secondary School Sevens tournament at Massey University this afternoon.

In wet and later extremely windy conditions, Scots College exacted revenge on rivals St Pat’s Silverstream who had beaten them in the final of the Wellington Condor Sevens qualifying event on Labour Day, defeating them 24-19 in the semi-final.

Scots College then went on to beat Wellington College 36-14 in the final, after Wellington College had accounted for fourth placed qualifier Hastings Boys’ High School 27-17 in the other semi-final.

The unofficial Player of the Tournament was recently crowned Wellington Secondary School Sportsman of the Year TJ Va’a, who scored a hat-trick of tries in Scots College’s semi-final win over Silverstream and another two in the final against Wellington College.

Other players to standout included Salesi Rayasi (St Pat’s Silverstream), Marino Mikaele-Tuu (Hastings Boys’ High School), Piri Paraone (Wellington College) and Steven Perofeta (Wanganui Collegiate)

Scots College went through pool play without conceding a point, with wins over Hastings Boys’ High School (22-0), St Peter’s, Palmerston North (55-0) and Tararua College (56-0).?

With Scots College, Wellington College and St Pat’s Silverstream each winning the three boys pools, the fourth semi-finalist was determined by the next best team with the greatest point’s differential. This proved tight between St Pat’s Town (+45), Palmerston North Boys’ High School (+43) and Hastings Boys’ High School (+67) who made it through.

Palmerston North Boys’ High School’s team comprised Year 12 players, whilst Hastings Boys’ High School, who were coached by former Hurricanes and All Blacks hooker Hika Elliot, ?fielded four U15 boys in their tournament squad.?

New Plymouth Girls’ High School won the girls’ section, beating Paraparaumu College 44-0.?

Of note, the Feilding High School girls’ team was forced to withdraw midway through pool play after being struck down with injuries.

The National Condor Sevens tournament is being played at Kelston Boys’ High School in Auckland in the weekend of 28 and 29 November.?
