Wellington teams in Auckland 7s this weekend

UPDATED: The Wellington Men’s and Women’s Sevens sides are competing in the third annual Auckland 7s competition this weekend.

The tournament at the Northcote/Birkenhead Rugby Football Club on the North Shore is the first leg in the build-up to the National 7s regional qualifiers in Palmerston North on 6 December. The Wellington teams are also entered in next Saturday’s Piri Weepu 7s hosted by the Wainuiomata RFC.

The two-day Men’s tournament opens on Saturday with Men’s pool play and continues on Sunday with the crossover rounds. The women’s section is played all in one day on Sunday. The winner of the Open Men’s Division will receive an invitation to compete in the 2015 Noosa International 7s Festival.

The Wellington Men’s side competes in Pool A on Saturday, alongside provincial union teams North Harbour and Waikato, and defending secondary schools Condor 7s champions Kelston Boys’ High School.

The other side of the draw features defending tournament champions Northland, 2012 winners Counties Manukau, host club team Northcote Birkenhead and Iconz Rugby from Queensland.

The Wellington Women’s team competes in an eight-team competition split into two pools. Wellington will play the Auckland, Bay of Plenty and North Harbour unions in Pool B. Pool A includes Waikato and Counties Manukau, the Cook Islands and Sydney club side Moroubra.

On Saturday the men meet Kelston Boys’ High School at 10.00 am, North Harbour at 11.40 am and Waikato at 2.00 pm. On Sunday the Women play Bay of Plenty at 11.00 am, North Harbour at 12.20 pm and Auckland at 1.20 pm, ahead of the knockout matches in both divisions.
