The southerners St Bede’s College will be battling the Wellington trio of St Bernard’s College, St Pat’s Wellington and St Pat’s Silverstream, for title honours at the second National Marist Secondary School Sevens tournament being staged at the MSP artificial turf in Wellington starting tomorrow (February 6).

St Pat’s Silverstream emerged the victors in the inaugural event last year but will be challenged for honours in a tournament that has drawn 16 teams from across the country, including Roncalli College in Timaru.

President of the St Pat’s Wellington Rugby Club, Gordon Noble - Campbell, said he is delighted with the support for the tournament which looks set to become an annual fixture.

“College sevens rugby is on the rise and our tournament shows there is a lot of enthusiasm around the country,” he said.

Extra dash will be added to the line-up with the inclusion of a Wellington Pacific Barbarians team while Rongotai College, Palmerston North Boys’ High and a Horowhenua-Kapiti College side will add further depth to the playing talent on show.

Noble-Campbell said the tournament draw will provide plenty of rugby time over the two days and the St Patrick’s College club which this year celebrates its 130th anniversary, has gone all out to provide hospitality in cooperation with the Marist Rugby Club.

A Marist tournament team will be selected from the Marist Colleges and a player of the tournament will join the New Zealand Marist side for its tour to Samoa later in February. A Marist coach will also be selected to travel to Samoa.

“The Marist Colleges have a lot of Rugby talent and the national tournament is a real opportunity for the boys to showcase their talents at a national level,” he said.

St Pat’s Wellington Rector Neal Swindells is a strong supporter of the tournament which provides experience for those who aspire to be part of a new Olympic sport.
