Auckland 7s tournament this weekend

Several provincial unions are using this weekend’s fifth annual Auckland 7s tournament at the Northcote/Birkenhead Rugby Football Club on the North Shore as part of their build-ups to the regional 7s qualifiers over the following three weeks.

Provincial union teams from the Northern and Central regions are entered in both the Men’s and Women’s sections of this weekend’s Auckland 7s tournament.

The three regional qualifiers for the National 7s in Rotorua are being played in Timaru (Southern) on 28 November, and Levin (Central) and Cambridge (Northern) a fortnight later on 12 December.

Both Wellington Men’s and Women’s teams are playing this weekend in Auckland. The Piri Weepu Sevens in Wainuiomata is also being played next weekend.

The two-day Men’s tournament opens on Saturday with The two-day Men’s tournament opens on Saturday with Men’s pool play and continues on Sunday with the crossover rounds. The women’s section is played all in one day on Sunday.

The winner of the Open Men’s Division will receive an invitation to compete in the 2016 Noosa International 7s Festival.

The Wellington Men’s team and the Auckland Women’s team are the defending champions. Representative players, Greg Foe (Wellington) and Chelsea Alley (Waikato) were last year’s men’s and women’s players of the tournament.

Seven of the nine men’s entries are provincial unions, while six New Zealand provincial unions line up alongside the Sunnybank club side from Brisbane and a Manusina Invitational team in the women’s section.

The Auckland, Bay of Plenty, Counties-Manukau, North Harbour, Waikato and Wellington unions are all entering their men’s and women’s teams.

There’s also a President’s grade competition being played on Saturday, featuring a group of Auckland and North Harbour clubs.
