New Zealand club rugby round-up 22 July

Wild weather across much of the country dominated the headlines this weekend, in particular, the South Island where half the Canterbury semi-finals were deferred and the Otago Metropolitan semi-finals were put back to Sunday.

Palmerston North Old Boys-Marist claimed their first Hankins Shield title after coming from behind to beat Kia Toa 28-27 at CET Arena on Saturday.

Top qualifier Napier Old Boys Marist completed an unbeaten season in Magpies country, and they will host Hastings Rugby & Sports in one semi-final, while Napier Technical and Clive will contest the other.

Fourth placed Otorohanga ended top qualifier Hamilton Marist’s season in a semi-final upset, while Hamilton Old Boys beat last year’s champions Melville. Otorohanga versus Hamilton Old Boys final next week.

Two closely fought semi-finals, with Rotoiti and Mount Maunganui contesting the final next weekend.

Counties Manukau

McNamara Cup Final – Bombay took out the final for the second consecutive year with a 32-24 win over Karaka. Both sides scored four tries, but the boot of Ki Anufe proved telling. It was 17-17 at halftime.

Defending champions Suburbs will meet University in next weekend’s Gallaher Shield final at Eden Park.
