New Zealand Marist Club and Secondary School Sevens tournaments this weekend

The fifth leg of the IRB World Sevens series hits Westpac Stadium tomorrow and Saturday. Meanwhile, across town at St Pat's College and at the Marist St Pat's club training field, the New Zealand Marist Club Sevens and the inaugural New Zealand Marist Secondary School Sevens tournaments are being played.

A combined 34 teams from all around New Zealand and one from China are playing in these tournaments, which are being held are separately from Friday to Sunday. There are 114 games being played.

The 18th annual New Zealand Marist Club tournament is being played on Friday and Saturday mornings. Play runs from 8.00am to 1.00 pm, so players and spectators can support the Westpac Stadium event on the two afternoons and evenings.

A New Zealand Marist Sevens team will be selected from the Tournament and will travel to Samoa for the Marist Sevens Tournament.

The Club tournament is split into three sections, the New Zealand Marist Club section, comprising four pools of three teams, the New Zealand Marist International Sevens, including two pools of three teams and featuring the visiting China Barbarians side, and the Women's section, which is one pool of four teams.

In the two Men's divisions Saturday is round-robin and quarter-final play and Sunday is semi-finals and finals day. Cup, Plate and Bowl trophies are all up for grabs. The Women's competition is on Saturday.

Pool play and quarterfinals in the Secondary School Marist tournament will take place on Saturday afternoon, with semi-finals and finals for the Bowl, Plate and Cup on Sunday morning.

Sir Gordon Tietjens will present the trophies at the conclusion of the Tournament on Sunday afternoon, when the Tournament Team will be named. One player from the Tournament will be selected to join the New Zealand Marist Sevens Team, which will compete in the 26th Marist Samoa International Sevens in Apia, in late February.
